Tropical Beauties  in southeast Asia -  Hibiscus and Orchids

With the right care, the plants from more southerly plants also feel well.

Hibiscus also known as marsh is a typical tropical plant and may be hot and bright. Therefore it should get as much sunshine as possible in temperate climates only at the high summer noon can be some shade. In addition, hibiscus has to be poured daily, at least in summer, because of the large leaves, which are used to evaporate a lot of liquid. But even if the bale is never allowed to dry out, there should be no stunts - which can lead to fungal attack.

Oleander is another plant spreading from the Atlantic coast over the Mediterranean to Southeast Asia.

Over about 300 different varieties of oleander are known worldwide. The plant is grown either as a shrub or as a stalk the growth form depends on the varietal characteristics as well as on the maintenance.

Despite a uniform growth pattern, there is a surprising variety of flower forms, leaf sizes and flower colors. The size of the individual blossoms - between three and seven centimeters - varies by more than double, depending on the variety, some smell strongly, others do not. The color palette includes many red, pink, lawn or apricot, yellow and white tones, some are also filled. For balcony or terrace, however, May recommend simple flowering forms, as these are more stable in the rain.

The plants are accustomed to a Mediterranean climate and needs a full sunshine in the summer with a lot of warmth, which is not always guaranteed in Central Europe. At its natural location, it grows everywhere where the roots always find enough water even in the heat, so gladly in river valleys. This high water requirement must also be taken into account during the care, so the oleander is one of the very few tub plants, which can tolerate "wet feet" in the growth phase, ie water in the dropper. Its fertilizer requirements are high. Elmar Mai recommends a flowering plant fertilizer with a lot of phosphorus and potash. The most important thing, however, is the sun: if the summer is cool and wet, the oleander does not bloom - despite fertilizer.

"Oleander likes lime and olerates a strong cut back and recovers well. His tip: "Every year, a few shoots strongly cut back, then there is a 'stage' offspring." Do not cut back the bloom, because there are always new flowers on the old inflorescences. If necessary, just cut off the old inflorescence. Oleander tolerates quite a lot of frost, nevertheless one should grant it at minus -5 degrees Celsius at the latest, because otherwise the bloom for the coming year suffers.

There are some diseases and pests that you have to look out for. The main problem with diseases is a fungus, which causes complete shoots to die. In this case, only preventive spraying and, in the case of infestation, radical dissection of the affected branches can be used. Also spider mites and shields can cause problems. Spider mites occur primarily in dryness and are recognizable on small leaves on the leaves and in severe infestations on fine spider tissue. Shields sit well camouflaged as brown "hats" on the trunk. In both cases you have to inject. Suitable means are available in the specialist trade.
